The European Union (EU) has added Metropolitan Tikhon (Shevkunov) of Simferopol and Crimea to its sanctions list. This is stated in a decision of the Council of the European Union.
The document states that the sanctions against the clergyman were imposed for supporting Russia’s policies and actions.
On June 9, it became known that the European Commission had included Patriarch Kirill in a draft list of personal sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Reports indicated that Western countries intended to make another attempt to impose sanctions on the head of the Russian Orthodox Church after Hungary vetoed a similar measure in 2022.
