In Moldova, more than 800 churches classified as historical monuments may return to state ownership. The sites in question belong to the Metropolis of Moldova, which is part of the Russian Orthodox Church.
This was stated by Culture Minister Cristian Zardan after a government meeting, the outlet Realitatea reports.
According to the official, the authorities are awaiting a final court decision, and in the meantime there is already a ruling by the Court of Appeal that voids the previous contract, which means the monuments in question will return to state ownership.
“These roughly 800 historical monuments are returning to state ownership. Frankly, we as a ministry do not have the capacity to manage 800 monuments. You understand, that means 800 buildings,” the minister said.
Cristian Zardan mentioned that in the near future the authorities will assess the condition of these buildings in order to determine what resources are required for their maintenance.
“We need to assess their condition and determine how many resources will be needed. There are several possible solutions, but we are waiting for the final decision,” he said.
The minister stressed that the issue is sensitive and requires a balanced approach in order to avoid social tensions.
“This is a very complex issue that requires a correct and balanced approach to prevent social conflicts. At the same time, it is in our interest to preserve the integrity of these historical monuments and ensure their proper maintenance,” Cristian Zardan added.
At the end of 2025, the Chișinău Court of Appeal ruled to annul the right of use of more than 800 religious buildings with historical monument status belonging to the Metropolis of Moldova of the Moscow Patriarchate.
