Nearly Half of Religion-Related Questions to ChatGPT Concern Islam, One-Third Christianity, Study Finds

Every week, ChatGPT users ask approximately 70 million religion-related questions. Nearly half concern Islam, while roughly one-third focus on Christianity.

The figures were released by OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. The study covers the period from September 2025 to September 2026, according to the news outlet inVictory.

According to the analysis, 45% of all religion-related queries concerned Islam, while 34% focused on Christianity. Other religions accounted for significantly smaller shares, with Hinduism representing 4%, Judaism 2%, and Buddhism 1%.

Researchers also examined what users were asking about. On average, 22 million queries per week focus on understanding religious texts. Another 16 million concern the significance of religious rituals and holidays. Roughly the same number address religious beliefs, the search for meaning in life, and spiritual guidance.

OpenAI believes that people primarily use artificial intelligence to deepen their understanding of their faith rather than replace it with technology.

We previously reported that the Christian organization The Pocket Testament League had recorded a sharp rise in online interest in the Bible. Over nine months, its materials appeared in more than 750 million search engine results worldwide. Between October 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, nearly 9 million people downloaded the Gospel of John through the Read Carry Share mobile app, averaging approximately 1 million downloads per month.

As LF previously reported, practicing Christians in the United States use artificial intelligence (AI) significantly more frequently than the average American. Researchers at Barna reached this conclusion following a large-scale survey.
